“I’m often drawn to works of subtle menace. Jin Mateo Kim‘s portraits draw you in with interesting likenesses, then unsettle you with inscribed lines like ‘I’ll kill you.’ Meanwhile, Mateo Jin Kim offers delicate-looking paper buildings with internal drawings of what you assume are ordinary domestic scenes—until you look more closely and discover that something is perversely “off” in these conventional dwellings. That sense of psychological wounding is quietly reinforced by the straight pins that hold the structures together.”
